Value in 2009: £3.4 billion

Uninterrupted growth 1997-2008

The profession’s collective fee earnings follow the pattern established by workloads - with about a one year lag. So fee earnings fell in the early 1990’s and began to revive from 1995. By 1998 fee earnings were on an upward trajectory. The peak years seem to have been 2007 and 2008; since when fee earnings have started to fall. Staffing numbers in private practice mirror this pattern very closely although the most recent period shows a huge fall. Our first fees survey in 1998 showed average reported fees were lower than the RIBA Recommended Fee Scales; since then, average fees  and hourly rates have been rising.

The relationship between fee earnings, workloads and staffing is a strong one. The spectacular dive in private practice staffing numbers in 2008 and 2009 (for all categories of staff except Principals) is alarming.
